A PERSONALIZED APPROACH TO LEARNING

Empowering Students to Choose Their Own Path

No two students learn the same way. At Connections Academy, we not only accept that fact, we embrace it. Our online model gives us the flexibility to tailor individual learning plans to each student’s needs and strengths, allowing them to learn how they learn best. We work in collaboration with parents, who act as their student’s Learning Coach, to make sure that we’re aligned on the best curriculum approach.

Here are just a few of the ways we collaborate with you to develop your student’s learning plan for success in online school:

Reviewing student background and academic history: Teachers, Learning Coaches, and students discuss strengths, skills, and previous performance to inform each student’s educational journey.
Evaluating test performance: Students are tested in math, reading, and English/language arts to help measure progress and establish learning goals.
Setting goals: Teachers and Learning Coaches work together as a team to set goals for the student’s personal and academic growth.

We recognize that as students evolve, so will their needs. One of the main benefits of the virtual learning model is its adaptability and flexibility. Regular check-ins between teachers, students, and Learning Coaches mean we’ll be able to adjust your student’s learning plan to keep them growing.

Special Education/Individualized Education Programs (IEPs)

The Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA) is a law that makes available a free appropriate public education to eligible children with disabilities throughout the nation and ensures special education and related services to those children. If a student meets eligibility for one or more disabilities under the guidelines and criteria outlined under IDEA, an Individualized Education Program (IEP) is developed. An IEP is a required, formal plan developed in collaboration between a child’s school, teachers, and parents to ensure they have the support they need to succeed in school and achieve their educational goals. Students with IEPs are welcomed at Connections Academy, and often benefit from the personalized attention online teachers can provide. When you enroll your student in Connections Academy, be sure to share your student’s IEP information with their teachers.

If you have concerns about your child's learning or education, please reach out to your child's teacher as a first step. Connections Academy schools provide trained staff who work with families to determine the next steps to support your student.

Gifted and Talented Students

Connections Academy makes it a priority to offer special programs for gifted students. At most Connections Academy-supported schools, the Gifted and Talented program is available for elementary school students and up who meet state eligibility requirements. When appropriate, advanced younger students may have the opportunity to enroll in these courses or work at a higher grade level. This program will allow your child to stay on track, be challenged, and interact with other like-minded peers in an online environment.

In addition to learning at their own pace, students at most Connections Academy-supported schools can also choose to participate in competitive programs like Advanced Placement®(AP®*) courses and dual-enrollment classes. If your gifted student is in high school, AP classes might be one of the most effective programs available at their grade level. At Connections Academy, students have the opportunity to take honors and AP courses if they excel in a specific subject area. Because gifted students are often learning at a faster pace than their peers, competitive courses are a great way to build their knowledge and prepare them for college and beyond.
